Protests erupted in Baymak, Bashkortostan, Russia, following the sentencing of Indigenous rights activist Fail Alsynov to four years in a penal colony. The court accused Alsynov of inciting ethnic hatred during a speech opposing a gold mine development. Supporters, estimated at 3,000, clashed with police, leading to arrests and tear gas use. Alsynov claims his words were mistranslated. The protest is considered one of Russia's largest since the Ukraine war. Alsynov, fined last year for criticizing the war, leads Bashkort, a banned grassroots movement preserving regional culture. Indigenous peoples in Russia, facing rights challenges, often defend traditional territories amid resource extraction projects.

In the northern Russian town of Pyalma, a community center remains mostly closed except for holidays and occasional summer events for kids. On January 1-2, 2019, an altercation occurred at the club between locals Sergei Pokotilo and Valery Minin, resulting in Minin stabbing Pokotilo in the abdomen. Initially, the injury seemed non-fatal, but Pokotilo's condition worsened, and he passed away on January 13. Minin was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison for the act but was recruited by the Wagner mercenary group while incarcerated, promising amnesty and good pay if he fought in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Upon his return to Pyalma, anxiety pervaded the community, as many were aware of Minin's violent past. However, details of his actions in Ukraine were unknown to the locals. Minin's presence in the town sparked fear and discomfort among residents, and his affluent lifestyle post-return heightened apprehension. Despite promises to pay compensation, Minin failed to fulfill the financial obligations imposed by the court. The community grappled with the repercussions of his actions and the potential for social unrest due to the return of such fighters.
